Molti rappresentanti della cultura internazionale si arruolarono volontari come autisti di ambulanze negli eserciti delle Potenze Alleate durante la Grande Guerra. Uno di questi fu Ernest Hemingway, qui ritratto proprio alla guida di un mezzo di soccorso. Hemingway, insieme a tanti altri scrittori e scrittrici, rifiutava un ruolo attivo in battaglia e disapprovava la violenza. Tra le donne viene in mente la figura di Gertrude Stein, la quale prestò la propria opera di volontaria come autista per gli ospedali francesi.
The enlistment of the cultural world
A considerable number of personalities of the world of culture, mostly writers, recruited as volunteer ambulance drivers for the Allies during the First World War. Often these personalities of the cultural environment shared the ideals of the Allies but, as they disapproved of the violence of war, refused an active role in battles. It was not possible for women to enroll as soldiers, therefore, for example, Gertrude Stein volunteered as an ambulance driver for the French hospitals.
