Allo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, anche William Somerset Maugham, troppo anziano per la chiamata alle armi, fu operativo nella Croce Rossa Britannica: prestò servizio in Francia, come autista di ambulanza, in un gruppo di 23 scrittori, tra cui il già citato Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos e Edward Estlin Cummings. Durante questo periodo Maugham continuò a scrivere: nel 1916 fece un viaggio nelle isole del Pacifico, al fine di raccogliere materiale per il romanzo La luna e sei soldi (The Moon and Sixpence), ispirato alla vita di Paul Gauguin.

William Somerset Maugham was too old to actively participate to the First World War, but he contributed as an ambulance driver in France with the English Red Cross troops, together with other 23 writers, among them were Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos e E. E. Cummings. During this whole period of time Maugham kept on writing. In 1916 he traveled to the Pacific Islands, to make research for the novel The Moon and Sixpence, based on the life of Paul Gaugin.
