Paolo Monti was one of the most important photographers and theorists of 20th century photography. Milan was the city he chose to live in and where most part of his professional career was set. His activity covers different thematic areas and experimental techniques. The Paolo Monti Archive recognized in 2004 by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism as of considerable historical interest, has been acquired by the BEIC Foundation.

The Navigli are a system of canals built starting from the 10th century, used for the transport of goods and persons and for irrigation.

Paolo Monti has left many photos of the city, some significant images show its Navigli not only as an engineering work but also a part of everyday life, a familiar presence for the people living in the surroundings or working on these waterways.
