Uno di questi fu <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ernest Hemingway, qui ritratto proprio alla guida di un mezzo di soccorso.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemingway, insieme a tanti altri scrittori e scrittrici,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rifiutava un ruolo attivo in battaglia <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disapprovava la violenza. Tra le donne viene in mente la figura di<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gertrude Stein, la quale prest\u00f2 la propria opera di volontaria come <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autista per gli ospedali francesi.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The enlistment of the cultural world<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A considerable number of personalities of the world of culture, mostly writers, recruited as volunteer ambulance drivers for the Allies during the First World War. Often these personalities of the cultural environment shared the ideals of the Allies but, as they disapproved of the violence of war, refused an active role in battles.
